Spirit of America Award Presented to Congressmen in Washington, DC
WASHINGTON, DC - The University of Mount Union awarded two members of the U.S. House of Representatives, Rep. Mike Coffman (R-CO) and Rep. Jim Himes (D-CT), with the Spirit of America Award at a reception on Wednesday in Washington, DC.
A program of the Ralph and Mary Regula Center for Public Service and Civic Engagement at Mount Union, the honorary co-chairs of the award were Alan Simpson, former Republican U.S. Senator from Wyoming, and Lee Hamilton, former Democratic U.S. Representative from Indiana. Simpson presented the award to the congressmen at the event.
The Spirit of America Award honors late Mount Union alumnus, Congressman Ralph Regula '48, by celebrating the values of bipartisanship and cooperation that he exemplified.
During his 36-year career in the U.S. House of Representatives, Regula was well-known for seeking bipartisan cooperation in order to achieve important legislative goals. The Spirit of America Award was presented to Coffman and Himes for working in that same bipartisan spirit as demonstrated by their nominations.
“So often today, it’s the more partisan voices that are recognized by their respective parties as being the champions,” shared Coffman upon receiving the award. “It is so nice to have an organization that represents those that are in the middle of trying to make things happen.”
“We need to keep that instinct alive,” Himes agreed. “At the end of the day, we do and we govern this country when we compromise, when we cultivate those personal relationships.”
Coffman is a representative from the state of Colorado and has been a member of Congress since 2009. He has provided leadership in the legislative areas of health care, veterans affairs, immigration reform and border security. Himes is a representative from the state of Connecticut and has also been a member of Congress since 2009. He is a member of the House Committee on Financial Services, serves as a ranking member of the NSA and Cybersecurity Subcommittee of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and is chair of the New Democrat Coalition.
