U.S. Representative Mike Coffman (R-CO) today introduced H.R. 2549, the ‘GI Bill Processing Improvement Act’, along with U.S. Representative Beto O’Rourke (D-TX).

The act would ensure those receiving GI Bill benefits for their military service do so in a more timely manner. It also improves oversight of schools and educational facilities receiving funding, by requiring them to certify that GI Bill funds received are used for veterans’ services and requires that school certifying officials are properly equipped to better counsel veterans on academic courses and their financial benefits.

Upon introduction, Coffman and O’Rourke offered the following remarks:

“Improving the ‘Post 9/11 GI Bill’ to make sure veterans have all the information they require when pursuing their academic goals is important…” Coffman added, “Requiring more transparency and efficiency from educational institutions who serve our veterans to ensure GI Bill benefits are used to their max potential is not only smart, but also the responsible thing to do”.

"This will make it easier for veterans to get an education, which means it will be easier to find a job and realize their full potential” said O'Rourke, adding,“I'm grateful to Mike for asking me to join him on this bill and for the University of Texas at El Paso for feedback on how to improve it."
