With scandal after scandal being uncovered involving the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) across the country and continued incompetence by VA’s leadership, the VA Inspector General (IG) has stepped down. Richard Griffin, who has held the post since January 2014, announced his retirement this week.

U.S. Representative Mike Coffman (R-CO), one of the VA IG’s leading critics, offered the following statement in reaction:

"It’s about time the VA's Inspector General stepped down," said Coffman. "Between whitewashing the Phoenix VA wait list scandal and refusing to investigate the $1 billion in cost overruns at the Aurora VA hospital construction project, I lost all trust in Richard Griffin's ability to oversee the VA. For an agency mired in bureaucratic incompetence and corruption, the leadership at the VA needs a strong and independent Inspector General to hold them accountable."
