U.S. Representative Mike Coffman (R-CO) with bipartisan support has introduced H.R. 1445, the ‘Veterans Reimbursement for Emergency Ambulance Services Act’. The intent is to correct the Department of Veterans Affairs’ (VA) regulations that unfairly saddle veterans with emergency ambulance payments.

“It is absolutely unconscionable that our veterans be left with an unexpected ambulance bill after seeking emergency medical attention because of bureaucratic regulations at the VA. VREASA seeks to correct this and to make sure that paperwork doesn’t get in the way of proper medical care of our veterans”.

Every year, approximately 150,000 veterans are faced with out of pocket expenses for emergency ambulance services because the VA denies emergency ambulance claims due to its interpretation of the regulation.

The bill aims to Direct the Secretary to approve emergency ambulance services for reimbursement when a ‘Prudent Layperson’ would have reasonably expected that a delay in seeking immediate medical attention would have been hazardous to the life or health of the individual.

Additional Cosponsors include Rep. Ralph Abraham, M.D. (LA-05), Rep. Rosa L. DeLauro (CT-03) and Rep. Mark Takano (CA-41).
