Representative Mike Coffman

Representing the 6th District of COLORADO

Veterans Affairs Accountability First Act of 2017

Mar 1, 2017
Press Release

Washington, D.C. - U.S. Representative Mike Coffman (R-CO) along with his colleagues on the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs have introduced H.R. 1259, the ‘Veteran’s Affairs (VA) Accountability First Act of 2017’. This bill aims to provide the VA Secretary increased discretion to remove, demote, or suspend any VA employee, including Senior Executive Service employees due to performance or misconduct.

“Time and time again, I have called to reform the VA—an organization that has been mired in a culture of corruption and bureaucratic incompetence. The VA has consistently failed to meet our nation’s obligations to the men and women who have made tremendous sacrifices in defense of our freedoms.”

Additionally, H.R. 1259 provides improved protections for whistle blowers, would allow the Secretary to reduce an employee’s federal pension if convicted of a felony, recoup bonuses provided to any employee who has engaged in misconduct or exhibits poor performance, and would provide for the means to recuperate relocation expenses obtained by VA employees illegitimately.
