The right to keep and bear arms is protected under the Second Amendment of the Constitution.  This is not simply protecting the right to use firearms for hunting but for self-defense as well.  However, it also means that we have an obligation to promote responsible gun ownership. I support doing so through policies that keep firearms out of the hands of criminals and the mentally unstable.

I am drafting legislation to help other states, who adopt Colorado’s “Safe-to-Tell” program, to receive federal grants to help them set up one up.  I’ve also co-sponsored legislation to help states which have adopted Indiana’s “Jake Laird Law” to receive federal grants to help them establish a "Red Flag" program that helps keep guns out of the hands of people who are threats to themselves or others with the necessary due process, and respecting the protections provided under the Second Amendment.
